Latin Legal Terms

Demens or “dementis”- in terms of Medical Procedures, this Latin verb means insane, crazy, mad, out of mind. In practice, people who are mentally incapable are not able to fully understand their own actions. This is why in most legal systems, together with being kept in special medical facilities for treatment, also they are not legally allowed to perform legal activities on their own – for example to sell or buy houses, cars, etc.
The word forms the legal term “dementia”, which refers to progressive decline in cognitive function of the brain due to damage, which is not caused by the age of the person.
