Latin Legal Terms

Bonus – this word means “good”; “well”. It participates in forming the legal maxim “Quisquis praesumitur bonus; et semper in dubiis pro reo respondendum”, applicable in the area of Court Trials. It means that everyone is honest by presumption, so in doubtful lawsuits it should be decided in favor of the defendant (basically because the claimant was not able to prove his claim with strong evidences). It relates also to the legal term “dolus bonus”, which means “good fraud”. It is used in the area of Criminal Law, to detail a situation where a criminal could be cheated for avoidance of his crimes. In such case the cheat or fraud would not be punishable by Law.
