Dum

Dum – this word means “while”, as long as, until. In practice, it participates in the phrase “Dum spiro, spero” which literally means “while I breathe, I hope”. Nowadays it is the State motto of the state of South Carolina, the USA. The word participates also in the expression “dum vita est, spes est”, which means “while there is life, there is hope (too)”.
