Latin Legal Terms

Ad litem

Ad litem – this term literally means “for the lawsuit”. Within the area of Family Law in some legal systems, it could participate in the term “guardian ad litem”- which refers to the figure of a person, appointed on the base of their legal capacity or professional standing, only for the purposes of prosecuting or defending an action on behalf of another such as a child or mentally-challenged person (who is incapable of representing themselves personally). Guardian ad litem for example, could be a social worker, or legal counsel.
