Latin Legal Terms

Ab initio

Ab initio – this term literally means “From the start” or “from the beginning”. If something is proclaimed to be obeyed ab initio, (for example, a mortgage, a contract, Title Deed, etc.) then it means that this thing should be obeyed from its start. A similar term is “ab incunabulis”, which has the same meaning. Nowadays the word is transformed in the modern “initially”.
